Souter Lighthouse, Whitburn.

Sunset edition.

Souter Point designed by Architect James Nicholas Douglass was the first lighthouse in the world to be actually designed and built specifically to use alternating electric current, the most advanced lighthouse technology of its day. It was opened 1871 and decommissioned in 1988, but continued to serve as a radio navigation beacon up until 1999 when it was finally closed.

  • As I have grown over the years, the appreciation I feel for my home town South Shields has increased immensely. I think when we become familiar with our environments, and adapt to a routine we miss the beauty in front of us. From the days coalminers descended down the pits to technological advances allowing us to work from home, there are generations of memories and stories here. Births, laughter, tears, mistakes, loss, hope, fear, triumphs flow through this wonderful community and in honour of this place I call home I am undertaking a project to pay tribute to South Shields with the hopes that others that were born in, live in, or have memories of this town share their stories and encourage us all to take pause, and look up at the beauty that surrounds us.
